About GMT-Master II

How the GMT-Master II works
Rolex introduced the GMT-Master in 1955 for airline pilots. The GMT-Master II followed in the early 1980s with one key change: you can set the main hour hand on its own, in one-hour jumps, without stopping the watch. Leave the 24-hour hand on home time, move the hour hand when you land, and use the rotating 24-hour bezel to read a third time zone.
The main references
16710: aluminum bezel
Made from the late 1980s until the mid-2000s, the 16710 came with black, red-and-blue ("Pepsi") or red-and-black ("Coke") aluminum bezel inserts. The inserts fit any 16710, so swapping them is common. A genuine Rolex insert is what matters.
116710LN and 116713LN: ceramic
In the mid-2000s Rolex moved the GMT-Master II to a Cerachrom ceramic bezel and a heavier case and bracelet. The 116710LN is steel with a black bezel. The 116713LN is two-tone steel and yellow gold. The "Batman" (blue-and-black ceramic) came in 2013 as the 116710BLNR and was later updated as the 126710BLNR.
126720VTNR: the "Sprite"
Released in 2022, the 126720VTNR has its crown and date on the left side of the case, with a green-and-black ceramic bezel. It uses the caliber 3285.
What to check on a used GMT-Master II

Jumping hour hand. Set the hour hand forward and back through midnight. The date should follow it in both directions.
Bezel insert. On a 16710, ask whether the insert is original to the watch or a later genuine replacement. Ceramic inserts should have no chips.
Bezel action. The bezel turns both ways and should click firmly.
Case and bracelet. Look for over-polished lugs and bracelet stretch, especially on the 16710's older bracelets.

GMT-Master II FAQ
What's the difference between the GMT-Master and the GMT-Master II?
On the GMT-Master II the local hour hand can be set on its own. On the original GMT-Master the 24-hour hand moves in step with the hour hand, and you read the second zone with the bezel.
What do "Pepsi", "Coke", "Batman" and "Sprite" mean?
They are collector nicknames for bezel colors: blue and red, red and black, blue and black, and green and black. They aren't official Rolex names.
Why is the Sprite's crown on the left?
Rolex designed the 126720VTNR for wearing on the right wrist or for left-handed owners. The crown and date sit on the left side of the case.
Can I change the bezel color?
On the 16710, genuine Rolex inserts can be swapped. On ceramic models the insert is not designed for owner swaps, and a non-genuine insert hurts value.
Which GMT-Master II references do you have?
The grid above is live. Recent stock has included the 16710, 116710LN, 116713LN, a "Batman" and the 126720VTNR.
